International Rescue Committee
Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) was established to assist victims of Nazi persecution. Today, the IRC is one of the world's leading nonsectarian refugee relief organizations and is consistently ranked among the leading charities in the United States. Of every dollar IRC spends, at least 90 cents go to refugee programs and services. Forbes has highlighted the IRC as one of three efficient and effective charities most qualified to make a real difference in impoverished areas of the world.
The Charlottesville Office of the IRC was established in June 1998 and resettles approximately 150 refugees each year. The office assists clients in obtaining housing, English language training and health care when they first arrive, and then helps them to find jobs and become self-sufficient as quickly as possible after arrival.
